Why is wellness so important to you?
I am truly passionate about living well! I feel that everyone deserves to live a happy and healthy life and that it's each of our responsibilities to strive to be the healthiest version of ourselves that we can be. My job is to help companies improve the health status and culture of their organizations by supporting individuals with programs and tools to live healthier! I feel so lucky to be doing what I do for a living!
What is your #1 employee wellness tip?
One of the most common wellness tips we tell employees is to start each day with the attitude that you will 'choose healthy'! For some that might mean drinking more water or moving more. For others it might mean choosing salad over fried food or choosing to be grateful instead of stressed. I love that we meet people where they are. We are all so unique and our health is personal to us. Moving more means something different to me than to the person just starting out. That's okay. What matters is that we are moving in a positive direction!
What advise can you offer companies who are just starting an employee wellness program?
Take a look at companies who are doing it successfully. We have helped pioneer wellness in this area and work with many companies that have been using our services for anywhere from 7-18 years with great success. What they have in common is a team like ours that is consistently on-site supporting employees in their wellness journey. Make wellness a part of the company culture. Don't forget to look at things like what foods you have at meetings, what employees are encouraged to do on breaks, and how supported employees feel in taking time for well-being activities.
How many 5Ks or 1-Mile Fun Runs have you completed?
I have only done a handful of races over the years. I'm so excited to be a part of the Doc’s DASH Training campaign! It's challenging me to train for something different and to start running again. I've moved more into yoga and weight training with walking as my main cardio. This is a chance for me to stretch and grow, which is what we challenge people to do in our work every day!
Why is running/walking your activity of choice?
I think running and walking are great ways to get more activity. We encourage people all of the time to put their tennis shoes on and just take those first steps out of the door! My best creative and spiritual thinking happens on my walks and runs. Now that I have an activity tracker, I've become obsessed with hitting my goal for steps each day! It's become a fun and sometimes funny challenge to hit the mark on some days. I've actually done a thousand steps (or crazy dance moves) in front of the TV at night in order to hit my goal. My family thinks it's pretty funny!
Why are you training for Doc’s DASH?
I love that Doc's Dash is a family and community event that promotes a healthier Louisiana! I think we all have our work cut out for us in order for Louisiana to move up the ranks in where we stand for health. Right now we seem to hit close to the bottom when it comes to everything from Obesity to Diabetes to healthy births and more. I love this state and I love the people! I want a healthy future for our kids and maybe one day grandkids. Events like these can be a great tool to get those messages out.
What’s on your 5K or 1-Mile Fun Run playlist (power song)?
I have very eclectic taste in music and find myself motivated by a variety of songs. Right now I'm pumped when I hear Led Zepplin, Eagles, Kings of Leon, Need to Breath and some of the more well-known 80's rock Ballads, like 'Don't Stop Believing'. Queen, Ellie Goulding, and Bruno Mars have some great tunes for running as well!
